Frequently Asked Questions

Am I eligible to join the Motability Scheme?

To be eligible to join the Motability Scheme, you must receive one of these disability allowances:

  • Higher rate mobility part of Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Higher rate mobility part of Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Higher rate mobility component of Child Disability Payment (CDP Scotland)
  • Enhanced rate mobility part of Adult Disability Payment (ADP Scotland)
  • War Pensioners’ Mobility Supplement (WPMS)
  • Armed Forces Independence Payment (AFIP)

And you will need to have at least 12 months remaining on your allowance when you apply.

If you are aged 65 and over, unfortunately the Attendance Allowance cannot be used to lease a car through the Motability Scheme.

What is Personal Independence Payment?

Personal Independence Payment, or PIP, was introduced in 2013 as a replacement for Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for disabled people aged between 16 and 64. You can find out how PIP affects your eligibility for the Motability Scheme here.

How do I update my nominated drivers?

Just get in touch with Direct Line Motability; they can help you change the drivers named on your insurance. Bear in mind that all drivers will be subject to Motability policies on who can drive your car. And regardless of whether you add them when you first apply or during your lease, they must meet DLM eligibility criteria. Please remember that only those drivers you have listed under the ‘permitted drivers’ section of your Certificate of Motor Insurance will be covered to drive your Motability vehicle.

How do I update my personal details if they change?

If you move house or change any of your contact details, please let Motability know as soon as possible to prevent any delays. Please bear in mind only Motability customers or their nominees can provide updates. If your vehicle or personal details have changed, please contact Arnold Clark on 0141 648 1088, or email customerchanges@arnoldclark.com. You’ll also need to inform the Department for Work and Pensions or Veterans UK.

How do you cancel a Motability car lease?

If you need to end your agreement early, you can call the Motability Customer Services team on 0300 456 4566 and they’ll review your circumstances. There is a £250 administration fee from Motability to cover their costs, and you will waive your right to a Good Condition bonus. Once you’ve returned the vehicle, your Advance Payment may be refunded to you on a pro-rata basis. However, if you cancel more than three times in a seven-year period, your eligibility may be affected.

What does the Motability Scheme lease package include?

The Motability Scheme's leasing package includes:

  • Insurance from RSA Motability
  • Servicing and maintenance
  • Full RAC breakdown assistance
  • Annual car tax
  • Kwik Fit replacement tyres
  • Windscreen repair/replacement
  • 60,000 mileage allowance over three years (or 100,000 for WAV customers)
  • Many adaptations at no extra cost
How often does my Motability car need to be serviced?

You should follow your manufacturer recommendations for having your Motability vehicle serviced. It will depend on what sort of vehicle you have, how long you’ve had it and its mileage. You should have received a manual and service book with your car, which we’d recommend you refer to (most people keep this in their glovebox). If you have any questions, please get in touch with our Servicing and Repairs team.

What happens at the end of my Motability agreement?

You can:

  • Select another car to lease via the Motability Scheme for three years.
  • Find out if you can keep your current car for longer.
  • Return your Motability vehicle and have your full allowance reinstated.
  • Annual car tax

It’s a good idea to plan your next lease vehicle a few months before the end of the agreement. Motability will send you their guide to leasing your next car and their car price guide, then you can contact Arnold Clark and speak to one of our Motability specialists.

Can I get a Motability scheme car on standard rate PIP?

No, standard rate PIP cannot be used to join the Motability Scheme, you must instead be in receipt of one of the following allowances with at least 12 months remaining on your allowance when you apply:

Are there any electric vehicles on the Motability scheme?

Yes, there is a choice of eco-friendly vehicles, including electric and hybrid cars and WAVs, available to lease on the Motability scheme. If you are considering an electric vehicle, you will need to have access to a charge point to recharge the battery and pay for the electricity that is used.

How do I charge my electric Motability car?

One of the great things about leasing an electric car through the Motability Scheme is that the home charge point is included at no extra cost for customers leasing their first pure battery electric vehicle.

To get a home charge point fitted, you must have off-road parking. If off-road parking is not available, you’ll be given access to a network of charging points for easy on-street charging.

Find out more about electric car charging on the Motability scheme.

How do I apply to the Motability scheme to lease a vehicle?

If you’re eligible for the Motability car scheme, all you need to do is contact one of our Motability dealers and arrange an appointment with our Motability specialist who will help guide you through the process.

When should I start thinking about leasing my next Motability car?

You can order your next Motability car three months before your lease expires, however, it’s a good idea to start thinking about your next vehicle a few months before this. At this stage, get in touch with your local Motability dealer and advise them of the make and model you’re interested in. They will then be able to give you more information and arrange a test-drive.

How much does it cost to lease a vehicle through the scheme?

There are three pricing options to choose from when leasing your new Motability vehicle.

  • Some vehicles cost less than your weekly allowance meaning you have money left over to spend on the things you need.
  • Other vehicles cost the same as your weekly allowance meaning you simply need to exchange your allowance to lease the vehicle.
  • And some cost more than your weekly allowance and will require an advance payment to be paid up front to cover the difference.
